NYTimes Wants On-Air Apology From 'Fox & Friends'

The New York Times has asked Fox News Channel's morning show, Fox & Friends, for an on-air apology for a segment that aired Saturday (July 22nd) that the newspaper called "malicious and inaccurate."

The Times is upset about a Fox host saying that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, quote, "was able to sneak away under the cover of darkness after a New York Times story" in 2015, and a comment that the U.S., quote, "would have had al-Baghdadi based on the intelligence that we had except someone leaked information to the failing New York Times."

The segment referred to comments made on Fox a day earlier by General Tony Thomas, the head of U.S. Special Operations Command, who said his team was close to al-Baghdadi after a 2015 raid, but the lead went dead after it was leaked in what he called "a prominent national newspaper."

Fox said Thomas appeared to be referring to a June 2015 Times story that detailed how U.S. intelligence had gotten valuable information. President Trump also tweeted Saturday blaming the Times for foiling an attempt to killing al-Baghdadi, apparently based on the Fox story.

The Times wrote yesterday that Trump was wrong, and it refuted Fox's story, saying the Pentagon issued a news release more than three weeks before the Times' 2015 story that could have tipped off al-Baghdadi. The Times also said the Pentagon raised no objections to the newspaper before its 2015 article was published. Fox said there would be an updated story today on Fox & Friends.
