Boston Radio: WGBH Names Joe Mathieu Anchor For Morning Edition

Joe Mathieu
WGBH 89.7 FM has announced that former WBZ 1030 AM morning anchor, Joe Mathieu, has been named anchor of Morning Edition, the public media broadcaster’s weekday radio program that offers the local take on the day’s national headlines.

Mathieu will join the WGBH newsroom in June to begin training and reporting, and is expected to take over on-air duties in August.

"We're thrilled to welcome Joe to our rapidly growing local newsroom. As a talented broadcaster and outstanding journalist, he will help us to take Morning Edition to the next level of high quality reporting," said Phil Redo, General Manager for Radio.

"After seven years hosting the show, Bob Seay has left his mark. As Bob shifts his focus to enterprise reporting and guiding the show, we'll all be grateful to take greater advantage of his editorial skills and experience."

Mathieu will replace veteran Morning Edition host Bob Seay, who will shift his focus to reporting and writing while remaining a critical member of the Morning Edition team. During Seay’s seven-year tenure Morning Edition’s audience grew 180 percent.

Mathieu has more than twenty years of broadcast news experience, including seven years at WBZ. In addition to anchoring WBZ’s morning show, he covered every major political race and the New Hampshire Primary, regularly appeared on WBZ-TV with Jon Keller and hosted various station events, including business breakfasts. He also recently started a popular Facebook Live broadcast, addressing his followers each morning before starting his shift.

"The opportunity to join WGBH as the host of Morning Edition is exciting for me both personally and professionally. I have been listening to WGBH radio for my entire life. And I'm most impressed by the commitment WGBH has made to covering local news through investments and partnerships that are quite rare in today's media landscape,” said Mathieu. “I'm excited to join that commitment on all of WGBH's broadcast and digital platforms. And it will be a great honor to once again greet listeners in Boston each morning."

Prior to joining WBZ, Mathieu worked in Washington, D.C. where he served as program director of P.O.T.U.S., Sirius XM’s news and talk channel dedicated to covering U.S. politics, a program which he developed and launched in 2007. He also worked as a news anchor and editor for two commercial stations in Washington, D.C. and spent seven years as the managing editor and anchor for CBS MarketWatch.
