NJ Radio: WFDU-FM Plans Power Increase

Non-com WFDU 89.1 FM will raise its output power from 650 watts to 3,000 watts this spring.

The upgrade will more than double the Teaneck-based station's FCC licensed coverage area and increase its potential on-air audience from 3.8 million to 8.2 million people in the metropolitan area.

WFDU will also broadcast in HD, which means there will be three digital channels at 89.1MHz.

The HD1 channel will be the WFDU programming that has been familiar to their audience for more than 40 years — music ranging from blues & country/bluegrass music to eclectic, folk, Gospel, oldies rock and soul/R&B.

The HD2 channel — Monday through Friday — will be an expansion of their regular music shows but, on the weekends, will offer jazz from the '40s, '50s and '60s.

The HD3 channel will be devoted to all-forms of classical music — from opera to exploring the history surrounding the classics.

"These WFDU upgrades are the result of the generosity of our listeners and the hard work of our all volunteer air staff," says general manager and program director Duff Sheffield. "We like to think of ourselves as 'the little radio station that could.' "
