NBC Pulls Brian Williams Name From Show Opening

NBC News pulled Brian Williams'name from its “Nightly News With Brian Williams” broadcast starting Wednesday evening.

His name is also be pulled from the “Nightly News With Brian Williams” logos that are prominently plastered on the broadcast’s Web site, social media feeds and other promotional and marketing materials while he serves a six-month, unpaid suspension for fudging the facts about being hit by enemy fire while covering the Iraq War in 2003.

“If they left Brian’s name on there, [his replacement] Lester Holt would have to explain to the audience every night that he’s standing in for Brian, which is not an ideal situation,” a source said.

Internal debates over removing Williams’ name went on at the network up until Wednesday evening before the show aired. One consideration was whether such a move kicked up any contractual issues, an insider explained.
