Chicago Radio: Roe Conn Promises Less Politics, More News

Roe Conn has confirmed he has signed an agreement to host weekday afternoons from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tribune Media's WGN 720 AM.

The deal was inked over the weekend and Conn is getting acclimated this week to his new digs at Tribune Tower. His first day on the air is expected to be Monday, Jan. 26.

Conn and co-host Richard Roeper were pulled off the air at WLS 890 AM in October with several months remaining on their contracts. Cumulus Media, which owns WLS, lured radio bad boy Steve Dahl from his west suburban basement to take over the afternoon shift in November.

The Chicago Tribune reports Conn has spent the last three months traveling and "having fun" while still drawing a paycheck from WLS-AM. Last week, he became engaged.

Conn, who started his career as a midday producer and then co-host for WMAQ 670 AM, was no less enthusiastic about getting back to work in Chicago radio, where he has been steadily employed since 1986. He joined WLS in 1989 as a weekend host for the station, then owned by ABC Radio. Conn worked his way up to afternoon drive in 1996, where he initially teamed up with Garry Meier — Dahl's former on-air radio partner.

Conn says his new WGN show is going to have a little bit more news content. "I know that talk/news/information listener in afternoons, when they get in the car, they do want to get updated — they don't want to miss anything. I look at that as my priority, to make sure listeners get the critical information for the day, and then have some fun with it."
