San Diego Radio: CCM+E Suspends Hank Bauer For Comment

Hank Bauer
Two days after using a Jewish stereotype during the final moments of the San Diego Chargers' radio broadcast against the San Francisco 49ers, announcer Hank Bauer issued an apology via Twitter, and was suspended for Thursday's final preseason game at Qualcomm Stadium against the Arizona Cardinals, according to ESPN.

In a prepared statement Tuesday, the Chargers said that Bauer had been suspended for a game because of his actions.

"Although we know Hank had no ill-will behind his remarks, we agree the comments were inappropriate," the team said. "Per Clear Channel's decision, Hank will not be broadcasting Thursday night's game.

At the end of San Diego's 21-7 loss to San Francisco, Bauer remarked on the air to colleague Lewin at how many fans had left the high-dollar seats at Levi's Stadium.

Lewin said he would have remained in his seat if he were a fan.

"But then again you know how copper wire was invented? Somebody dropped a penny between Josh and his family member," Bauer said to Lewin on the air.

Bauer and Lewin work for Clear Channel Communications, which runs the flagship radio station for the Chargers.

Bauer, 60, spent six seasons as a running back and special teams player for the Chargers from 1977 to 1982. Bauer has served as the team's color commentator for radio broadcasts since 1998.
