British Radio: More People Listening Online Every Day

How are people listening to radio? The official body measuring radio statistics in the United Kingdom, RAJAR, keeps an eye on these trends through their MIDAS reports.

According to Forbes, the latest Measurement of Internet Delivered Audio Services organized by RAJAR with help from IpsosMori confirms the obvious, that the majority of radio listening in the United Kingdom happens live… 97.3% of consumption is at the time of broadcast. While traditional AM./FM radio accounts for just over half of those hours (53%), new technology is rapidly coming in to the mix.

Digital Radio usage is on the rise, making up over a quarter of the hours (28%). This is vitally important in the UK as the Digital Switchover will see all BBC radio stations and many national and regional commercial stations currently on FM switch to digital broadcast only, at some point in the future. Getting people on to alternatives is a challenge for the Radio industry, so the increase of ‘Radio via Digital TV’ at 6% and ‘internet connected devices’ at 7% is also welcome.
