Report: AC/Hot AC Top Radio’s Best Billing Formats

Radio’s top-billing formats show a shift by advertisers to music, according to InsideRadio.

Between 2000 and 2012, AC and hot AC formatted-stations grew their revenue by more than $100 million, according to BIA/Kelsey. The result is a new format champion, as the financial research firm says female-skewing formats have overtaken  news and talk to deliver the biggest share of radio revenue.

In 2012, 15.9%  of radio revenue came from stations with an AC or hot AC format, compared  to 14.4% from news and talk stations. It’s a reversal from 2000, when spoken word stations topped music.

“AC is the leader because the demographic group  that it attracts is higher-educated, higher-income people,” BIA/Kelsey chief  economist Mark Fratrik explains.
